On July 14, 2024, a special episode of Guillaume Pley’s YouTube show _Legend_ aired. This time, forensic pathologist Philippe Boxho dissected ten famous deaths that deeply impacted history.

Princess Diana: The Fatal Accident That Shook the World

On August 31, 1997, the world mourned as Diana Spencer, known affectionately as Lady Di, died in a car accident under Paris’s Pont de l’Alma. She and her then-boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed, were trying to outrun relentless paparazzi. The tragedy sent shockwaves globally. Her state funeral on September 6 gathered more than three million grieving attendees in London. Even after renouncing her princess status in 1996 post-divorce from Prince Charles, Lady Di remained a beloved public figure.

The circumstances surrounding her death fueled countless rumors. Though she didn’t die immediately, she succumbed to her injuries at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. On his show, Guillaume Pley probed coroner Philippe Boxho for details on this devastating incident.

Coroner Philippe Boxho Reflects on Princess Diana Rare Injury and Death

“She was stuck in the car for quite a while, her right foot lodged under a seat. She was somewhat aware and even asked, ‘What happened?’ That was almost her last word before slipping into a coma,” Philippe Boxho explained. He then noted that Lady Diana’s chest had sustained significant damage from the crash.

“There was an injury… The attending surgeon had never seen anything like it in his life—it was very rare,” Boxho revealed. He specified that the injury occurred on a pulmonary vein, a hard-to-reach area for surgeons. The impact of the collision tore this crucial vein. “That’s what killed her,” reassured the doctor. Guillaume Pley then asked the burning question, “Could she have been saved?” Boxho’s response was solemn. “It’s complicated. Thinking about it, I’ve never seen such a case, and I’ve performed over 4,000 autopsies,” he concluded.
