After skipping out on the traditional Paris Fashion Week schedule, Saint Laurent debuted their spring summer 21 collection to much fanfare yesterday, unveiling a fabulously dramatic collection with an equally dramatic runway event in the Saharan desert (think fire-lined sand dunes, the leggy likes of Anja Rubik and Mica Argañaraz, 60s-style marabou dresses). And while people weren’t able to attend the event in person—the virtual front row was predictably star-studded, with longtime house muses like Charlotte Gainsbourg and Zoë Kravitz tuning in remotely, wearing their favorite pieces from the new collection.
The end result was a proverbial moodboard for genuinely chic holiday season dressing. Granted, our preferred December roster of champagne-filled soirées and cozy dinner parties is on the back burner this year, but most of us are still wanting to look cute for Christmas and New Year’s—even if we’re likely to be celebrating it via Facetime. Enter stage right: Hailey Bieber in a feather-trimmed bodysuit and square-toe, metal-capped slingbacks, Lily Collins in YSL-logoed bike shorts (if Anthony Vaccarello says they’re back, they’re back), a 70s-esque pussybow blouse and oversized statement sunglasses, and Zoë Kravitz in a #freethenipple sheer burgundy blouse.
In fact, Vacarello’s spring-summer 21 collection—with its heady mix of wearable fabrics like ribbed jersey, and glam-rock adornments like sequins and velvet—may have struck the perfect sartorial balance for our current moment. We’re well past the unsexy pragmatism that defined the early days of lockdown, yet can’t quite see the sense in wearing towering six-inch heels and uncomfortable miniskirts for a life largely lived indoors. Saint Laurent’s muses are the blueprint for the fine line in between: festive meets cozy, sexy meets comfort. C’est magnifique! Sign us up.
