We’ve long known that cholesterol plays a crucial role in maintaining good health. However, when it is high, it can lead to various health problems. According to the Assurance Maladie (French Health Insurance), cholesterol levels should not exceed 2 grams per liter of blood. Excessive amounts of bad cholesterol (LDL) can accumulate and cause a range of health issues. Zayn Majeed, a surgeon at Harley Street Hair Clinic, has shed light on one unexpected consequence related to hair health.
High Cholesterol Could Be Behind Your Hair Loss
High cholesterol, or hypercholesterolemia, might be the culprit behind your hair loss. Dr. Majeed has linked high cholesterol levels to hair loss, potentially even causing alopecia. “A study revealed that both men and women with androgenetic alopecia had significantly higher levels of triglycerides (another type of lipid), total cholesterol, and LDL,” Majeed stated. “Another study showed that women with androgenetic alopecia had significantly higher levels of total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. The same applies to men, as a study found that the total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio was significantly higher in men with androgenetic alopecia,” explained the surgeon.
How to Address the Issue?
Besides affecting your hair, high cholesterol can also increase the chances of other health issues like heart attacks, cardiovascular problems, and arteriosclerosis. If you suspect a hair loss issue, Dr. Majeed suggests reaching out to a healthcare professional for further assessment. “If you’re experiencing hair loss, I recommend seeing your physician for a routine blood test to check your cholesterol levels”. He emphasises that dietary changes, quitting smoking, and engaging in regular physical activity can help lower cholesterol levels.
It’s really important to pay attention to the messages our bodies are giving us – even our hair can provide meaningful insights into our health.
