While Lizzo might serve as everyone’s inspiration when it comes to self-love, the singer recently revealed that her infectious confidence wasn’t always inherent. During press to promote her involvement with Dove’s Self-Esteem Project, Lizzo admitted that she’s been on a journey when it comes to her hair, as she struggled to accept her naturally textured locks growing up.
“There were plenty of times where I was almost embarrassed to show my natural hair because people were like, ‘Oh, that’s not cute. It’s not good enough, or it’s not silky enough,’” the star said in an interview, before revealing that she had only just begun to overcome those childhood doubts.
“I actually just recently started getting into my hair-love journey, maybe two or three years ago. Before then, that was my final frontier in loving myself, was loving my hair.”
Now Lizzo regularly rocks her natural hair, styling it into playful buns and braids, while also continuing to switch things up with bold wigs. After watching a movement develop online that celebrates natural and textured hair types, she decided to share her own.
“When I finally, in the last few years, started to come to terms with ‘this is my hair, it’s not going to change, and it’s beautiful,’ I felt like I finally could say that I truly loved myself,” she said.
Here’s to going natural and feeling Good As Hell.
