Double denim has had a long run. Every fall, the matching jacket and jeans come back out, and every fall they look a little more like a uniform. This season, one of the most famous voices in the world is proposing an alternative, and she chose to show it on the streets of Paris, a few hours before walking onto a stage in front of tens of thousands of fans.
The look: Tom Ford leather, from collar to hem
On October 14, Céline Dion left her Paris hotel on her way to a concert at Paris La Défense Arena, recently renamed Plenitude Arena, according to HOLA! USA. She wore a cropped, double-breasted black leather jacket with structured shoulders and oversized lapels, left open over a black top, and a matching leather pencil skirt falling below the knee, with a slit and a slim belt at the waist.
Both pieces come from Tom Ford’s spring 2027 collection, and the rest of the look stayed in the same house: Tom Ford leather pumps with double ankle straps, the Tom Ford MIA bag and Penn sunglasses, as listed by Red Carpet Fashion Awards. The styling was signed by Annie Horth, her longtime collaborator.
Why leather on leather works better than double denim
The British magazine Woman & Home summed it up in one line: leather on leather is autumn’s answer to double denim. The logic is the same, one material from head to toe, but the effect is the opposite. Where double denim reads casual and a little predictable, matching leather reads sharp, expensive and deliberate.
Céline’s version also shows why the formula works after 50. The jacket is cropped, so it never overwhelms the frame. The skirt is long and straight, which keeps the leather elegant rather than rock’n’roll. And the black top underneath breaks the shine just enough to keep the whole look from feeling like a costume.
A comeback worth dressing for
The outfit belongs to a bigger moment. Her Paris residency marks her return to live performance after years of health problems that forced her to cancel her Courage World Tour; she revealed in 2022 that she was living with stiff-person syndrome. The first 16 shows, more than 480,000 tickets, sold out within a few hours, and ten more dates have been added for May 2027, according to Wikipedia. Between concerts, the streets of Paris have become her second stage.
How to wear head-to-toe leather this fall
- Keep one piece short. A cropped jacket over a midi skirt, like Céline’s, balances the volume and keeps the look light.
- Match the color, not necessarily the finish. Two blacks that are slightly different, matte and glossy, look intentional rather than stiff.
- Break it with a simple layer. A fine black knit or a crisp white shirt underneath softens all that leather.
- Go for a slim belt and a pointed shoe. They lengthen the silhouette and make the outfit look polished rather than biker.
- Faux leather works too. Good-quality vegan leather gives the same graphic effect at a fraction of the price.
And if leather feels like too much, the other strong statement of the season comes from another icon: Cher’s white Moncler puffer. For more cuts that flatter after 50, see the winter coats stylists recommend.
The bottom line
Céline Dion has spent her career proving that drama, done well, never looks dated. On the way to one of the biggest comebacks of the year, she did it again with two pieces of black leather. Double denim can take the season off.
