Celebrities tend to have access to any healthcare and wellness treatment in the world. But there is a common supplement, loved by many which Scarlett Johansson swears by — and you can get it for under $20.
The Black Widow actress shared some of her wellness hacks to back in 2024 and explained that this supplement helps her sleep, recover from her busy schedule and even gives her nervous system a boost.
Scarlett Johansson’s Top Supplement For Sleep
Johansson previously told The Zoe Report: “I take magnesium at night. It helps me sleep. I feel like it’s good for recovery. It’s good for your entire central nervous system.”
And she’s not wrong — magnesium is really important in the body.
We naturally get magnesium in our diets from foods such as leafy green vegetables, some fruits (such as kiwis), nuts, seeds, whole grains, and beans. We need magnesium as it supports the body in over 300 bodily processes, ranging from energy production, in supporting the health of our bones, in keeping cells working, in making sure our muscles work properly, supporting heart health, and of course, it plays a role in our sleep.
Studies have shown that higher levels of magnesium in the body can support sleep quality, duration and help with better energy levels too. While magnesium supports the nervous system too — research shows that it supports healthy stress levels and reducing anxiety.
And so, if we are unable to get enough magnesium from natural sources, some of us can benefit from supplementation.
What Types of Magnesium Supplements Are There?
There are different types of magnesium compounds and different supplements as a result. Common examples are magnesium glycinate and magnesium L-Threonate. Magnesium Glycinate tends to be heralded as one of the best for sleep and for the nervous system.
You can get these in different supplement forms such as pills, capsules and even sprays.
Who Are Magnesium Supplements Good For?
You might benefit from taking a magnesium supplement if you have low levels in your body. To find out if you do, you can request a blood test from your doctor. The normal range of magnesium in the blood is 1.7 to 2.2 milligrams per deciliter.
Can You Take Too Much Magnesium?
You can actually take too much magnesium which can cause diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping. Very high levels can lead to magnesium toxicity which can be dangerous (although it’s uncommon).
And so, while magnesium supplements can be effective for some, it won’t work for everyone so it’s important to check with a health professional before taking anything new.
