Before Lady Violet Bridgerton became the ton’s most devoted matchmaker, she had a sweeping romance of her own. Now, Netflix and Shondaland are giving that love story its moment in the spotlight.
Announced on October 8, a new limited series will follow young Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The project marks the franchise’s second spin-off, following Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Prepare for another reason to cancel your evening plans.
What Will the Violet Bridgerton Spin-Off Be About?
The prequel will explore Violet’s early life and reveal how Violet Ledger met and fell in love with Edmund, the future father of their eight children. Shondaland has confirmed the central romance, although the full storyline and the years it will cover remain under wraps.
For longtime viewers, the appeal is easy to understand. Violet and Edmund’s marriage became the family’s romantic ideal, shaping her determination to help her children find love. His sudden death following a bee sting left a devastating absence—one that still hangs over the family’s happiest moments.
A prequel offers the chance to know Edmund beyond that tragedy, and to see Violet experience the butterflies she so enthusiastically encourages in everyone else.
Who Is Behind the Series?
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners. Tom Verica will direct and executive produce, with Betsy Beers also joining as an executive producer.
Rhimes has already helped shape one of Violet’s most memorable moments: she wrote the character’s “I am the tea that you are having” scene in Season 4, which brought Violet’s own desires into focus. Her next chapter will take us back to where her romantic life began.
Who Will Play Young Violet—and When Will It Premiere?
Casting has yet to be announced. Ruth Gemmell plays Violet in the main series, while Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed her younger self in Queen Charlotte. Whether either actress will appear in the new project remains unconfirmed.
There is also no official title, premiere date, or episode count yet, so any suggested release window is speculation.
Meanwhile, Bridgerton Season 5 is filming in London, with Francesca and Michaela’s romance taking center stage, and Season 6 has already been greenlit.
The Bridgerton family’s romantic future is looking busy. But its next irresistible love story might just be the one that started everything.
