Summer might be over, but beach season does not have to be. While much of Europe is already pulling out sweaters and preparing for shorter days, a handful of destinations are still enjoying temperatures around 80°F, warm seas and remarkably little rain well into October.

To find the best places for a last-minute dose of sunshine, villa company Solmar Villas analyzed 105 European destinations, comparing autumn temperatures, rainfall and flight prices. One Mediterranean island dominates the results, taking all four top spots – while Spain, Greece and Malta also make a convincing case for postponing winter just a little longer.

Cyprus Is Europe’s Fall-Sun Winner

Ayia Napa tops the ranking, averaging just 2.3 wet days a month between September and November. Daytime temperatures range from around 75°F to 84°F, while the Mediterranean remains a remarkably warm 77°F to 79°F.

By October, the peak summer crowds have also largely disappeared, leaving broad sandy beaches and clear water without the height-of-summer chaos.

Elsewhere in Cyprus, Limassol combines beaches with a marina and lively old town, while Larnaca offers a quieter escape centered around its palm-lined Finikoudes promenade.

Paphos is ideal if you want history with your beach vacation. Its UNESCO-listed Archaeological Park is filled with Roman villas and mosaics, while nearby bays remain warm enough for an afternoon swim.

For Americans, Cyprus requires some commitment. There are no nonstop flights from the US, with most journeys connecting through London, Athens or another major European hub. But the payoff is weather that can still feel like late summer well into fall.

The Canary Islands Offer Almost Guaranteed Sunshine

Sitting off the coast of North Africa, Spain’s Canary Islands are another reliable choice when mainland Europe starts cooling down.

In October, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura typically reach highs of around 79°F, with very little rainfall. Lanzarote combines beaches with dramatic volcanic landscapes, while Fuerteventura is known for seemingly endless sandy shores and excellent surfing.

Vew of the famous Papagayo beach, an incredible beach with volcanic shores and transparent waters, ideal for practicing all kinds of water sports such as kayaking, snorkeling or diving. Lanzarote is a volcanic island located in the Canary Islands and is one of the main European tourist destinations. It is located in front of Africa and belongs to Spain

Tenerife is another strong option, with October temperatures typically ranging from around 68°F to 79°F. Gran Canaria offers everything from large beach resorts to mountain villages.

Traveling from the US usually means connecting in Madrid, Barcelona or Lisbon before taking another flight to the islands.

Greece And Malta Combine Sunshine With Culture

For travelers who want more than a beach, Greece and Malta still deliver warm weather in early fall.

The Athens Riviera stretches along the Saronic Gulf, offering coves, beach clubs and marinas within easy reach of the Greek capital. Rhodes and Kos also maintain temperatures in the mid-70s°F during early October, with seas warm enough for swimming.

Malta rounds out the Solmar top ten, combining temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s°F with historic cities, rocky swimming spots and the medieval streets of Mdina.

Timing, however, matters. Cyprus and the Canary Islands remain the safest bets from late October into November. Greece and Malta are more reliable earlier in the season, before cooler evenings arrive.

For maximum warmth, choose Cyprus. For dependable sunshine and dramatic landscapes, head to the Canaries. And if you want history alongside your hammock, Greece or Malta may be the perfect fall escape.
