Leave it to Pharrell Williams to look at a technical water shoe and see the makings of a fashion object. His ongoing VIRGINIA project with Adidas Originals has already delivered the wonderfully exaggerated Adistar Jellyfish and the low-profile Vario Flat Earther. Now the collaboration is heading somewhere wetter. The new Virginia Watermoc reaches into the Adidas outdoor archive and reworks the Adventure Water Moc from the early 2000s, turning a shoe designed around utility into something that looks equally convincing miles away from the nearest river. First revealed during a beach takeover in Marseille, the silhouette arrives globally this September, just as fashion’s obsession with practical footwear shows every sign of becoming stranger rather than quieter.
The Adidas Watermoc Brings the Outdoors Into the Sneaker Rotation
The original reference remains visible, though Pharrell has pushed the proportions and details firmly into VIRGINIA territory. The Watermoc combines a flexible neoprene opening with breathable mesh, then adds reflective webbing that gives the upper its distinctly technical character. Bungee speed lacing replaces a conventional lace-up system, while a deeply lugged rubber outsole supplies the grip expected from its aquatic ancestor. The result lands somewhere between trail equipment and a futuristic slip-on, which is precisely where the most interesting sneakers seem to live right now. Color makes the silhouette even harder to ignore. The launch includes Blue, Yellow, and Black, allowing the shoe to move from unapologetically loud to relatively restrained without losing its peculiar shape. For anyone still treating performance footwear as something that belongs exclusively with hiking gear, Pharrell appears determined to complicate matters.

How to Wear Pharrell’s Virginia Watermoc
The styling trick is to give the shoe some resistance. Rather than leaning fully into outdoor clothing, let the Watermoc interrupt pieces that feel more polished. Loose tailored pants can make its chunky sole look intentional, while long denim gives the neoprene upper a less technical context. The black version is perhaps the easiest entry point, especially under wide silhouettes where only that sculpted outsole gets to announce itself. The Virginia Watermoc launched globally on September 5 for $140, through Adidas CONFIRMED, adidas.com/pharrell, and selected retailers. Its timing also feels telling. The sneaker conversation has already made room for ballet flats, slim retro runners, and increasingly eccentric hybrids. Pharrell’s latest proposition simply asks one more question: what if your next fall shoe looked ready to swim away?
