Birkenstock has spent the past few years proving that comfort and high fashion can share a shoe closet quite happily. Its latest collaboration, however, brings a particularly persuasive clash of personalities. Etro has taken the German brand’s famously pragmatic footwear and sent it on a decidedly more bohemian detour, covering familiar silhouettes with the decorative language that has defined the Milanese house for decades. First revealed on Etro’s Fall/Winter 2026 runway in February, the partnership officially arrives this September with two Birkenstock classics at its center, including a Boston clog celebrating its 50th anniversary. Consider the birthday dress code considerably less sensible than expected.

The Boston Clog Gets the Full Etro Treatment

Introduced in 1976, the Boston hardly needs help staying relevant. Its closed-toe shape has moved from practical staple to fashion-world fixture, which makes Etro’s intervention feel less like a rescue mission and more like permission to misbehave. The new versions retain Birkenstock’s cork-and-latex footbed while introducing Etro’s signature paisley alongside richly worked suede and nappa leather. Western-inspired hardware adds a more decorative edge, while embroidery pushes the clog firmly into Etro territory.

On the runway, the shoes appeared with long skirts and substantial knitwear, giving the familiar Boston a nomadic quality that feels especially right for fall. Socks are very much part of the equation here, making the clog less of a transitional shoe and more of an all-season proposition.

The Gizeh Is Ready for Its Boho Era

The Gizeh also joins the collaboration, taking Birkenstock’s minimalist thong sandal in a much more expressive direction. Etro brings texture and artisanal detailing to the streamlined shape, while fringe gives the shoe a sense of movement that feels almost improbable for something built around an orthopedic footbed. It is precisely that tension that makes the partnership work. Birkenstock supplies the practicality; Etro gives it somewhere far more interesting to go.

The first Birkenstock by Etro drop lands on September 10, with additional releases expected in the months ahead. Somewhere along the way, the ugly shoe became a luxury object. Now, apparently, it wants a little paisley too.
