Among them is Valarie Tarazi, who has taken up the mantle to represent Palestine in the aquatic disciplines at the Paris Games 2024.
With only 26 Palestinian athletes known in history to have competed in the Olympics, Tarazi stands out.

She Started Swimming at the Age of 3
Born on October 9, 1999, the Palestinian-American raised in Illinois, USA, has been passionately devoted to swimming since childhood. Her journey has been one of relentless dedication, culminating in her becoming an Olympian.
She’s Representing Palestine at the Paris Games 2024
With over 20 years of honing her craft, Valerie officially passed the Olympic trials for the Paris Games. In a heartfelt post, she shared, “I couldn’t be prouder to be going back to my roots and representing Palestine in Paris!”
Won a Gold Medal at the Sports Games Algeria
Last year at the Sport Games Algeria 2023, Valerie excelled, winning medals across various events. She clinched gold in the 100m backstroke and 50m breaststroke; silver in the 50m butterfly, 100m, and 200m breaststroke; and bronze in the 50m backstroke.
A Young Olympics Ambassador
On her path to the Palestinian Olympic team, Valerie attended a two-week summit in Olympia, Greece, where she introduced herself and Palestine on the international stage. This event marked her official entry into the team, where she spoke about solidarity and the Olympic spirit.
Embraces Her Palestinian Heritage
Valerie’s commitment to her cultural heritage is unwavering. Throughout her career, she has proudly displayed her Palestinian roots, whether by wearing the Palestinian flag at swim meets, donning a keffiyeh-inspired blazer, or graduating with a shawl in Palestinian colours.
Has a Master’s Degree
Beyond her swimming prowess, Valerie is academically accomplished. After earning a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, she completed a Master’s in Supply Chain Management, which she graduated in Auburn University last May.
A Person of Discipline
Olympians are epitomes of discipline, and Valerie is no exception. Sharing her journey on social media, she recalled her struggle and triumph in qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Swimming Trials at 16.
Though she initially fell short, her steadfast commitment saw her qualify by a full second. She noted in the post, “This experience taught me to persevere through adversity, never give up on my goals, and stay focused on what’s important.”
Now with her official stamp as an Olympian, Valerie took to Instagram and expressed her gratitude, “ I can’t even begin to thank everyone who has helped along the way.” She says.
