The UAE has always prided itself on its trailblazing women. And it seems that in the latest move for women’s empowerment, Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais is the figure to know about.

A woman of intellect, style and, most of all, undeniable leadership, Shaikha is leading the next generation of Emirati women to take on international roles.

Recently, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), also known as UN Tourism, revealed that the UAE presented Shaikha for the position of Secretary-General of UN Tourism for the term 2026 to 2029.

Heralding this exciting development for the people of the UAE, Shaikha is the first Emirati woman to be nominated for the post. With glory days set on the horizon, if elected, she would be the first in the region to assume such a prestigious role.

Sheikha Nasser, a natural fit for the role, possesses 15 years of managerial excellence. And so, whether it’s commanding a board room – which we’re sure she’ll do so effortlessly – or leading women to shape the future, here, GRAZIA brings you four facts about Shaikha Al Nowais.

She studied at the renowned Zayed University in dubai

Shaikha previously studied at Zayed University, an education centre known for fostering great minds and leaders, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Sciences and Finance in 2006.

She holds the position of Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels

Shaikha assumed the Corporate Vice President – Owner Relationship Management role in 2018 at one of the most notable hotelier companies in the MENA region, Rotana Hotels. Holding over 12 years of experience at the infamous hotel and resorts. She has the robust role of establishing and maintaining relationships with all of Rotana’s property owners. Her experience in the hospitality industry was, suffice to say, the push that brought her to take on the nomination for the UNWTO Secretary-General role.

The First female board member of the Dubai Hotel Group under the Dubai Chamber of Commerce

Holding another first of firsts, Shaikha is also the first woman to be a board member of the Dubai Hotel Group under the umbrella of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. Announced early in January 2025, this initiative brought together key industry leaders to help foster collaboration in the hospitality industry. Naturally, Shaikha has played a pivotal role.

A leader who supports

Shaikha has always been known to support the emerging leaders of the UAE. Through her years of experience, Shaikha has been committed to developing talent and industry growth by supporting various initiatives. She currently shares the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Tourism and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Abu Dhabi Hospitality Academy – Les Roches to help build the next generation of leaders.
