Overnight the 78th Venice International Film Festival descended into the sea side city. Penelope Cruz was one of the first guests from a star-studded lineup to arrive at the lauded gala. As a long-time friend of Chanel, it was only expected that she’d hero the French Maison in three stunning appearances throughout the day.
During the daytime affair, the Oscar-winning actress was spotted in a white tweed Chanel mini-skirt suit with a lambskin Boy bag and a satin peep-toe heels. The look was pared down with a classic tee.
Cruz was later seen at a photo call and press conference for the forthcoming film, Parallel Mothers. Standing alongside director Pedro Almodovar and co-stars Milena Smit, Aitana Sanchez-Gijon and Israel Elejalde, the 47-year-old rotated another Chanel skirt suit. The second ensemble featured checked stitching and a fringed hem which was paired with black peep-toe heels.
The Chanel tweed skirt suit is a beloved hallmark for the French house and has been worn by prominent women such as Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy. Parallel Mothers follows the two single women who are due to give birth and form a life-changing bond. So it is not only expected that Cruz would opt for the style, but extremely fitting given the film’s protagonists: strong women.
Speaking at the press conference, Cruz told reporters this latest role was one of the most challenging she has had to portray. “It is a very difficult character,” Cruz said, per Variety. “I think it’s one of the most difficult characters I’ve interpreted. But I never felt like I was alone.”
The grand finale to the actress’ sartorial tour (at least for now) was on the premiere red carpet. The 47-year-old wore a spectacular floor-grazing gown. Layers of black and white tule was enveloped by billowing pleats; the hem was finished with feathers. The bodice was kept simple with a square neckline and gathered straps.
The Venice Film Festival will run from September 1 to September 11. Other films set to premiere include Dune (starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya) and Spencer (starring Kristen Stewart).
