We love horror movies: the jump scares sending our popcorn airborne, screaming at the leading actress to watch where she’s going and the face-palms when she inevitably trips while escaping her tormenter. Halloween is the perfect time to binge watch those you may have missed  – especially with most of us staying at home this year – so turn off the lights, feed the cat and enjoy our pick of Netflix’s scariest offerings.

The Conjuring

The movie that launched a thousand spin-offs, The Conjuring is often considered one of the decade’s best horror films thanks to thoughtful scares, brilliant camerawork and believable acting (a rare occurrence in the horror genre). Based on real-life investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren’s case files, the film follows the couple as they help a family tackle strange happenings in their new farmhouse. A film we would watch again and again.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

The eagerly anticipated sequel to The Haunting of Hill House, the compulsively watchable The Haunting of Bly Manor is a masterclass in filmmaking. The original cast returns for a season unrelated to the first; this time it centres around an American au pair called to England to care for recently orphaned children. As with all English estates – those in horror movies, anyway – the property has a gnarly backstory that unfolds throughout the eight-episode affair.

Jigsaw

Long-time fans of the Saw franchise will appreciate the eighth instalment for its easy-watching, gore-filled goodness and delightfully disgusting traps. Crazed killer Jigsaw continues to wreak havoc on the city… but how is that possible when he has been dead for ten years? *cue dramatic music* While the film is likely to never win an Oscar, it makes for a fun-filled Halloween all the same.

A Quiet PlacE

The expertly directed A Quiet Place combines a compelling storyline with award-worthy acting to produce an experience like no other. A truly unique concept, A Quiet Place is about a family forced to live in complete silence in order to avoid man-eating creatures that hunt by sound, and stars real-life couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also wrote and directed the film).

Hereditary

A family in mourning after a sudden death. Noises in the dark. Ancestral secrets. Hereditary has all the makings of a traditional horror movie however it is anything but. A spine-chilling film that will have you feeling uncomfortable from the outset, you’ll be discussing it long after the final credits.

The Purge: Anarchy

The second instalment in The Purge franchise, The Purge: Anarchy follows individuals left vulnerable and exposed during a 12-hour period where all crime is legal. An action-packed horror for those that prefer heart-pounding plots rather than ghosts behaving badly.
