Welcome to Life, Styled – the new series by GRAZIA where we step inside the wardrobes of the region’s most stylish women and decode their week in outfits.
This week, we’re joined by Tshego Seakgoe – fashion creator, creative and all-around style muse – whose signature take on fashion is as quietly commanding as it is endlessly refined.
From the oversized black blazer she swears by to the bags she wears on repeat, Tshego shows us how true style is less about trends and more about knowing what works – and wearing it well.
How would you sum up your style in three words?
Classic. Effortless. Minimalist.
What’s the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without – and why?
My black shoulder-padded, oversized blazer. This piece elevates any outfit; a simple black mini dress instantly becomes more stylish paired with a black blazer, and so do a simple pair of blue jeans and a white t-shirt.
Let’s talk handbags. Do you have a go-to, or do you match the bag to the mood?
I have a small handbag collection made up of classic bags like my Bottega Andiamo clutch in Fondant, Chanel classic double flap with gold hardware and Gucci Dionysus mini bag in the limited edition navy velvet, to name a few. I find that when it comes to bags, I like to buy classic bags that can work both day and night. I don’t fall into the trap of buying into trends when it comes to big-ticket items, so I love bags that can match with most of my wardrobe.
Is there a piece of jewellery you wear every day? Tell us the story behind it.
For my birthday this year, my husband gifted me the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Quartz with the diamond face in size 33m. It has easily become my most prized possession. I think it’s one of those pieces that is casual enough (lol, there’s nothing casual about it) to wear every day in Dubai because we tend to dress up a lot more here than in other cities. It’s also perfect to wear in any formal settings, with a beautiful gow,n because of its small, feminine size and the diamonds, they add a little extra glitz to the watch and overall look. I usually wouldn’t pair a watch with a formal gown, but this is a special piece that works in both casual and formal settings.
What’s your style philosophy when it comes to accessorising – less is more or the more the better?
I think less is more, but always accessorise. That’s what gives your outfit personality. I always wear my watch, diamond tennis bracelet and diamond and pearl studs. That’s my daily stack; however, I have a great collection of bracelets, bangles, beads, hats and scarves for when I want to elevate a basic outfit. Accessories are what turn an outfit into a “look”.
Do you have a fashion signature – something that people always associate with you?
Probably the colour black. I wear a lot of black, it’s my thing. I feel more confident wearing an all black outfit than wearing colour.
Do you think the way you dress is more instinctive or intentional?
This is such a good question. I definitely think I dress more instinctively based on the classic, staple pieces I collect, but I also dress intentionally depending on the setting. I’m about to go on a girls’ trip to Mykonos, and I’ve decided to play with a lot more colour for this trip because of the setting, so I guess I’ll be dressing more intentionally on this trip.
Has your relationship with fashion changed over the years? How so?
My relationship with fashion has completely changed. Two years ago, I had a very clear and distinct aesthetic and over the last year, I fell in love with enjoying clothes again and moving away from an aesthetic. As a millennial, growing up with Instagram and working in social media, the focus was heavily based on having an aesthetic, so it was easy for people to box and identify you, but over time, I found myself getting bored with that because it left no room for imagination and fun. The whole point of fashion for me is to have my own style whilst enjoying playing with clothes. That’s the phase I’m currently in.
What’s one outfit or accessory that instantly makes you feel like your most confident self?
My current go-to clothing item that instantly boosts my confidence is any halter neck top with a plunging neckline. I easily have about 10 in my closet for the summer, in different colours and obviously shades of black lol. For accessories, nothing beats a good hair day and perfect makeup. I could be wearing a tank top and jeans, but if my hair and makeup are done, I’m unstoppable.
