The Paris 2024 Olympics are officially underway.

Over the weekend, the 206 competing countries made a dazzling entrance at the opening ceremony in the French capital.

And while the Olympic Games are a space to celebrate sportsmanship and athleticism, it does also make for quite the fashion show.

One such country which is making a statement with its uniforms is Kuwait, particularly the women’s team. The designer behind the striking ensembles for Team Kuwait is Farah Al Babtain, founder of the label Muhra.

The official attire for the Kuwaiti athletes features the traditional Thobe Al-Nashl, crafted in a striking blue that symbolizes the sea and aligns with the Kuwaiti team’s colours. Embellished with precious crystals, the garments capture the movement of Kuwait’s waters. Verses from the national poem “Memoirs of a Sailor” by Dr. Mohammad Al-Fayez are also embroidered with golden threads and evoke the resilience and determination of the Kuwaiti people.

The intricate belt, decorated with the colours of the Kuwaiti flag, showcases traditional ‘Sadu’ art, symbolising hope and beauty amidst the desert sands.

Athletes on the female team for Kuwait’s participation in the 2024 Olympics include rower Soaad Alfaqaan, 800m runner Amal Al Rumi, sailer Amina Shah and swimmer Lara Dashti.

Kuwait at the Olympics

The 2024 Olympic Games will mark the 12th time the country has competed since 1968.

With a storied history, the nation has won three bronze medals: two in shooting by Fehaid Al-Deehani (2000 Sydney and 2012 London) and one by Abdullah Al-Rashidi in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Despite political challenges, including competing under the Independent Olympic Athletes banner in 2016 due to suspension, Kuwaiti athletes have consistently demonstrated their prowess and commitment.
