An innovative method of collecting stem cells developed by a team of doctors and researchers at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, ADSCC has been granted a patent by the Ministry of Economy for the development of an innovative and promising treatment for COVID-19 infections.

The pioneering method – which involves extracting stem cells from the patient’s own blood, activating them and reintroducing them – was administered to 73 COVID-19 sufferers in the UAE who have all been successfully treated and cured of the virus.

Here’s the science bit: the patients inhale the treatment into their lungs after it has been nebulised into a fine mist in the hope of regenerating lung cells and modulating the immune response to keep it from overreacting to the COVID-19 infection and causing further damage to healthy cells.

The groundbreaking treatment has successfully passed the initial phase of clinical trials, and is intended to complement conventional medical intervention rather than replace it. The full range of tests are expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces were the first to congratulate the citizens and residents of the UAE on this potentially game-changing discovery.

On behalf of the people of the UAE, their Highnesses thanked the team of doctors, researchers and support staff at ADSCC for their efforts in making this scientific breakthrough which, they declared, will add to the global efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health and safety of the people of the world.
