Harry Styles has marked the near end of his electric multi-year world tour by giving us a gift: a new music video in “Daylight”. The fifth music video from the star’s 2022 album Harry House, Styles has well and truly earned his stripes—or should we make that his bows—as one hell of a seasoned performer. And this video shows him firmly positioned within his own groove: confident, cheeky, and theatrical.
From whimsically riding a penny-farthing about some circus grounds in a sequinned, Bird Bird yellow unitard, to walking a tightrope and riding a horse in a skeleton costume, Styles’ costumes are a nod to his Love On Tour style—and perhaps a satirical ode to the antics of his travelling show. (Or his mindset. How could you not go absolutely mad after travelling to a new city and performing every few days?)
In 2022, Styles told The Howard Stern Show that the song was written “as a stream of consciousness,” and not at all linked to his former girlfriend Taylor Swift’s track titled the same name.
“You are reading too much into it,” Styles said when asked about the possible connection to his ex. “You know I’d love to tell you that you’re spot-on, but you’re not. We will always wonder.”
Ever so fitting, Styles says “Daylight” was written in the night time, just hours before daybreak.
“‘Daylight’ was like, ‘We have to find a way to stay awake and finish this because if we all go to bed then this is going to turn out not what it would if we finished it tonight,’” he shared with Zane Lowe on Apple Music in May 2022. “We pulled an all-nighter and then, went down to the beach as the sun was coming up.”
“Daylight” Director Tanu Muiño thanked her star performer for a wonderful set experience.
“Harry, nothing you can’t do,” Muiño posted to her Instagram. “Flying, joggling, riding bikes and horse’s, walking on the rope, dancing (my favourite)…Thank you for having me H, Love!”
