What does it really mean to be sustainable? Several brands may claim that they are but what are the requirements to label yourself as sustainable? Sara Tamimi is one of the latest designers that doesn’t shy away from the question when asked what makes her label sustainable, so we sat down with her to get the inside scoop on her design process just in time for her latest drop, ‘Chapter 02.’
What makes your designs sustainable?
Each piece has its own unique aspects that make it sustainable, some materials and methods are more sustainable than others.
That all depends on water consumption, chemicals and fibers used. We aim to depend on natural fibers, dye them using natural dyes or chemical free dyes especially the harmful ones that are now used in a lot of common labels that most people are unaware of.
Why did you decide to focus on sustainable clothing? What does sustainability mean to you?
Fast fashion is the worst for the environment. That is why our brand’s core value is creating clothes that last in your closet for life; sustainable living manifested into fashion. After creating the first collection, I came to realize how the fashion industry has neglected the environment and contributed in many aspects to the climate change issue the world is facing today. That was when I decided that I will do things differently, and ensure, that this brand will prioritize our dedication to the environment. We believe in the aesthetics of fashion, but our brand is defined by our values. The next collection will be very exciting and will exemplify sustainability.
Beyond fashion, I’m the most serious about the environment because of what it means for our future generations. As a mother, I want my son to live in a world that promises a better tomorrow than today.

What inspired you to start designing?
Growing up, I always insisted on shopping for my own clothes; I had always imagined certain designs in my head, and when I couldn’t find what it is I was looking for, I began picking my own fabric and going to the tailor to execute my visions. That was when I started sketching different designs, inspired by John Galliano for Dior at the time.
What is the main theme and story behind your latest collection?
Growing up and seeing all the elegant fashion of women in that era it was something that inspired me, it was also the fact that I was so close to it seeing that my mum embraced her femininity elegantly through fashion and so Sara Tamimi is about bringing back those timeless pieces that have influenced me through life in a new way. My pieces are an interplay between time culture and new trends for example the oversized shoulders.
