There’s no doubt about how keeping up with your fitness regime during Ramadan can be incredibly tough. With a lack of hydration and very early mornings, for some people working out can become unbearable. However, there are some tips you can take this Ramadan to help you not only keep up with your fitness and stay safe while exercising while fasting.

The best time to work out

The key is to work out as close to breaking your fast as possible. The great news is that gyms are extending their opening hours to allow you to plan your workout around your eating window. The best time to train is just before you break your fast so either very early in the morning or any time between 3 – 5 pm. This is the best time as it enables you to refuel soon after your workout and don’t forget to drink plenty of water when you do.

WHAT TO EAT

It’s best to eat healthy carbohydrates which are high in energy such as whole grain rice, potatoes, fruit and oatmeal. It’s incredibly important to eat foods high in protein such as eggs, yoghurt, turkey, chicken, salmon or tuna. It’s ideal to opt for foods that are slow in releasing energy to help to maintain your strength throughout the day so that your energy lasts longer throughout the day, helping you maintain blood glucose levels.

RECOVERY

Ramadan is not the time to try to gain muscle, take it easy at the gym. Rather aim to maintain fitness instead with short light sessions of resistance training to prevent muscle loss. Also, think about recovery: every workout regime requires rest. This could be the time to take a step back for a week or two so you can come back strong after Ramadan.
