Named the “most beautiful building in the world”, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Museum of the Future has become synonymous with the spectacular Dubai skyline in a short space of time. Specifically, what really makes it stand out is the exquisite Arabic calligraphy, designed by Emirati artist Mattar Bin Lahejy, which covers the building’s entire exterior.

And now, further celebrating the art of calligraphy, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has launched the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale.

The inaugural event will commence in early October, highlighting the creativity and talented Arabic calligraphers, as well as those on an international scale.

It was recently announced via UAE state news agency WAM, over 200 artists and calligraphers, both local and international, will participate in the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale, whose pieces of work while be showcased at key cultural institutions across the emirate.

These include: Dubai Design District (D3), The Cultural and Scientific Association, Juma Al-Majid Center, Foundry, Khawla Art Gallery, Firetti Gallery Contemporary Art, Efie Gallery, Al Shindagha Museum, Jalila Cultural Centre for Children and Al Safa Art and Design Library, all where the public will be able to appreciate, view and enjoy the art of calligraphy.

The works of all 200 artists will be showcased across the different venues, of which will be a mixture of traditional and contemporary installations in five languages, outlining the diverse culture Dubai holds. A series of workshops and other activities will also take place with the aim to “nurture emerging talent in the field of calligraphy”.
