The British Royal Monarchy officially announced the passing of Her Majesty The Queen today, September 8th 2022, saying, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.” In the announcement, the monarchy added, “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

These official notes from the British Royal Monarchy follow a surge of attention this morning and afternoon in the UK when the regional correspondents for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) changed into black clothes for Her Majesty The Queen during its news coverage. At the time, the broadcasters’ symbolic sartorials recognised the critical state she was in and acted as an anticipatory attempt to mark the tearful passing of Her Majesty The Queen this afternoon.

In an Instagram post, the BBC noted, “all the Queen’s children, including Prince Charles, are either at, or are travelling to, her Scottish estate near Aberdeen,” adding that, “Prince William has also travelled to Balmoral today. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also be travelling to Scotland.” We now know that Her Majesty The Queen was surrounded by the love of her family during these final moments.

Her Majesty The Queen was 96 years of age at her passing and served as the constitutional Monarch of the United Kingdom for 70 years. She was coronated on June 2nd, 1953, in London’s Westminster Abbey and is the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, which began on February 6th this year and ended this summer. As the longest-serving British Monarch, Her Majesty The Queen dedicated much of herself and her life to the role of servitude for her people.

She is succeeded by her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales. His Majesty The King declared earlier today, “the death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

Our hearts are with the British royal family and the people of the United Kingdom as they undergo this time marked by mourning and change.
