Millennials have finally gotten to the age wherein the younger generation is old enough to make fun of them, just as we did to the boomers who came before us. Gen Z thinks we’re so hilarious, in fact, that they’ve even renamed us all Cheugs.
Where do they do most of this joking around? Tik Tok, an app that if you’re a millennial, you shouldn’t really be on at all (and if you are, it’s peak Cheug).
But in a brilliant turn of events, Gen Z has recently been embracing all things ‘90s and early aughts, from music to fashion. Hell, they even thought they literally invented skorts.
In a recent viral video, a Tik Tok user can be seen excitedly showing off her skort—a skirt that has shorts in the same fabric underneath. In the clip, she speaks to the camera saying, “You know how we get excited about dresses that have pockets? I gotta show you this! Skirts that are shorts!” She then takes a step back and lifts up her skirt to reveal the pair of shorts underneath.

Of course, those of us who were hitting our teenage years in the ‘90s—when the Y2K fashion which is all the rage now was being first debuted—know that skorts are no new thing. They did, however, one day go from being all you’d ever wear to being completely uncool.
But in the past few months, partly thanks to unaware Tik Tok users like the one above, skorts have been slowly making their way back into designer collections—and now, thanks to Charlize Theron, they’ve made their red carpet debut.
Theron opted for perhaps the most chic skort possible: a black Dior version, pairing hers with a white button-down shirt and a black handbag – both also from Dior – and pointed-toe boots. She rounded off her perfect outfit with a classic red lip and wore her blonde hair in wet-look waves.
It’s official: while we were busy stressing about the return of low-rise jeans, skorts quietly made their way back. Practical, cute and according to Gen Z, not Cheugy. Tick, tick and tick.
