We can always rely on Ashley Graham to bring her trademark positive attitude to absolutely everything – even common beauty quandaries, like trying to self-tan at home. As many fake tan enthusiasts will know, the struggle is all too real when it comes to tanning your back. There’s that one elusive spot that our human limbs just can’t reach on their own, prompting us to bring in reinforcements by way of a partner or friend to fill in the gaps.

However, as the pandemic has demonstrated, there are times when we might not have access to a second set of hands to tan our backs. Of course, there are dedicated applicators that you can buy to address those tough-to-reach places, but if you don’t have one at your disposal – what’s the alternative? Pull a muscle trying to slap some tan onto the unreachable area, or bear an obvious gap while wearing that open-backed top to the bar?

Evidently even a supermodel like Graham has had such concerns, which is why she recently shared an easy back-tanning hack on her Instagram.

Taking a simple tanning mitt, Graham – who is the face of iconic self-tan brand St. Tropez – uses a number of household items to extend its reach and apply fake tan to her back. First she places the mitt over a wooden spoon, giving it extra length and allowing her to reach over her shoulder to apply St. Tropez’s tanning solution to her back.

Next she tries the same method but with a flocked fabric coat hanger instead of the wooden spoon. This option doesn’t work quite as well, as Graham is seen dropping the mitt just as she starts to apply it.

For her final trick, Graham goes in blind with St. Tropez’s Purity Face Tan Mist (Dhs128), applying a few spritzes over her shoulder. It’s a simple hack but it works, as the formula is clear and won’t transfer, meaning Graham isn’t in danger of developing streaks or marks.

Some solid advice that we’ll be trying ASAP.
