I was surprisingly sad to see season one of Sex And The City reboot And Just Like That finish up after just ten episodes. While the series has certainly been divisive, watching Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte stumble through their 50s, embracing the highs and lows of growing older, and figuring out their place in the world, really grew on me.

While season two of And Just Like That is yet to be confirmed, the finale of season one definitely left the door open for everyone to return – including Samantha. Here’s what we envision for our favourite ladies should a second season get the green light.

Carrie Will Return To Her SATC Roots?

With a dating advice podcast now underway (and a delicious new fling with her gorgeous producer, Franklyn, played by Gossip Girl star Ivan Hernandez) it’s pretty obvious that Carrie will be single and looking for love in season two. We’re hoping to see both Franklyn and lovely teacher Peter vying for Carrie’s heart, but we also think Carrie enjoying her single years in her 50s, like new friend Seema does so expertly (played by (Sarita Choudhury), will be a great way to inject some of the spirited fun Sex and the City was known for. It’s been sorely missing in lieu of grief in the And Just Like That episodes, and for the series to maintain its nostalgia-fuelled audience, the new series needs it. Badly. Maybe Aiden could even return?

I hope Big is no longer a regular topic in season two. As much as I loved the nuanced way And Just Like That dealt with grief and the loss of a partner, I was never a fan of their relationship and will be happy to see Carrie move on.

Miranda And Che Will Peak, Then Crash

It’s pretty clear that Che and Miranda are not star-crossed lovers, but a heady, chemistry-fuelled fling that has breathed new life into Miranda’s autopilot existence. While originally I felt the series had done Miranda dirty, I now feel differently. I have loved Miranda’s whirlwind transformation – it’s a misogynistic traditionalist attitude that women should remain the same as they age. We expect women to figure out who they are by the time they have children, then to maintain interests, sexuality and behaviour until they die. It’s ridiculous to believe that people can’t change or discover more about themselves all through life, and Miranda’s conversation with Carrie in the finale, where she accuses Carrie of expecting her to maintain the status quo, really shed light on this expectation even enlightened women have of other women.

Still, I don’t believe Miranda’s relationship with Che is necessarily about Che as much as it is about Miranda. Che was her catalyst for change, but Miranda is infatuated, not in love. She’s exploring her sexuality, discovering new parts of herself and fascinated by this modern dating culture Che operates in. I definitely expect season two to show us the high point of their lust-based relationship, followed by a complete breakdown as Che’s ambition clashes with Miranda’s desire for quality time. They don’t seem compatible beyond the bedroom. There, I said it.

Charlotte Will Come Into Her Own
Charlotte seems done with putting everyone else’s needs before her own. Image: HBOMax

One of the best episodes of season one was the finale when it comes to Charlotte. Finally, after decades of serving everyone except for herself, she stood her ground and ended up holding her own Bat Mitzvah after her child Rock decided they didn’t want one.

It was a turning point for Charlotte and I’m sure it’s where her character will head in season two – assessing her life and determining what facets of her personality and behaviour are really her, and what is for show. Charlotte has always been obsessed with the opinions of others. Will she now upend her life as the Upper East Side queen?

We’ve also seen Charlotte learning to be a mother of teenagers. Rock is one of the best characters in the reboot – it feels far more natural to watch Charlotte and Harry come to terms with gender in 2022 via their child than the times And Just Like That went heavy-handed on the wokeness. Given Rock is now questioning and exploring their spirituality, I’m expecting more hand-wringing and eventual acceptance from Charlotte and Harry for season two.

Seema, Nya and Lisa Will Finally Have Juicy Plotlines
Seema is such a welcome addition to the series. Image: HBOMax

It’s been a shame to see these interesting, complex characters relegated to the sidelines to the point where we barely know anything about them, don’t you think? While Lisa Todd Wexley (played by Nicole Ari Parker) hasn’t yet piqued my interest, I was really invested in Seema’s refreshing blend of Samantha’s sexuality teamed with Charlotte’s romantic nature, plus Professor Nya Wallace working through fertility issues and her own hesitation around motherhood was a great, modern topic worth exploring.

Obviously, we had a lot to catch up on with our original trio – so I’m hoping we get a longer season two that allows for more airtime for these three new faces. I want to know what happens with Nya’s relationship now that she’s actually addressed her ambivalence about having children, and I want to see more of Seema dating in New York.

Will Samantha Return For Season Two?

Even though And Just Like That grew on us, we still really miss Samantha. Image: HBOMax

One of the most open-ended plot points from the season one finale was Carrie finally catching up with Samantha (off screen, but still!) in Paris. I still do not believe Samantha would a) be a texter or b) text the way she has been in And Just Like That, but it’s clear that the writers have wanted to leave the door wide open for a return from Kim Cattrall.

Look, it’s so unlikely Cattrall will make a comeback after all the public sniping between her and Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead-up to And Just Like That.

“I don’t think I would [be OK with Kim Cattrall coming back on set], because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared,” Parker told Variety an interview last week.

But you never know – if those two mend their bridges, perhaps we’ll see our favourite foursome back together for season two. If Samantha does make a comeback, I anticipate a lot of her character arc will be around figuring out singledom in your 60s. What does casual dating look like at an age where it’s socially unacceptable?

Samantha’s character was always such a welcome reprieve from the bullsh*t expectations society puts on women “of a certain age” – to settle down, to want a relationship, to treat sex as a dating tactic and not something you enjoy. She’s been sorely missed in And Just Like That, and her return would definitely bring some of that spirited energy the show needs.
