Grab your binoculars, a good shawl (or two), and as many snacks as you can fit into your mini bag; a huge meteor shower is expected to light up the skies in the UAE this week.

You can expect to see around 60 shooting stars and fireballs whizzing across the sky per hour as the annual Perseids meteor shower reaches its peak on Wednesday night.

The Persieds are one of the brightest batches of shooting stars, and they couldn’t have come at a better time – we could all use a sparkling celestial distraction right about now for obvious reasons.

Dubai Astronomy Group recommends watching the skies after midnight on Tuesday, in the early hours of Wednesday. Better yet, why not join the group on the star-gazing gathering they’ve organised in Al Qudra desert from 10pm on Tuesday evening? Of course, social distancing will be observed and attendees are asked to wear face masks at all times.
