Over the last few years, Salama Mohamed and Khalid Al Ameri have become household names in the region.

Known for their lighthearted skits on social media as a couple, the pair grew a loyal following of millions.

However, with recent engagement news from Khalid and the disappearance of their joint social media account, it has led to mass speculation about the status of the Emirati couple’s marriage.

Below, GRAZIA breaks down the timeline of Salama and Khalid’s relationship.

2006: When they met

A simple yet sweet story of union, Salama and Khalid met through family. The pair were introduced by Khalid’s brother-in-law who thought Salama and Khalid would mesh well together. Upon meeting, they both decided they had much in common and wanted to continue getting to know each other. By late 2006, Salama and Khalid were officially engaged to be married in a traditional Emirati format.

2007: a marriage union

While the length of engagements ranges between couples in the region, some taking days while others take months, Khalid and Salama were engaged for six months before taking their relationship to the next level. Officially married in June 2007, the Abu Dhabi-born and raised Salama and the half-Scottish-Emirati Khalid officially began building a life together. In the years to come, the pair welcomed two children together – sons Abdullah and Khalifa.

Pivoting to Social Media

Khalid began his career in finance, but soon realised he wanted to work in the world of media. After graduating from Stanford, he landed a job at CNN in Abu Dhabi, but the role was short-lived. This forced Khalid to look outward, which resulted in a pivot to social media. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Khalid disclosed how it was only when Salama surprised him with a camera and told him to create his own content he felt supported enough to commit full-time to his own brand and account. Officially quitting his 9 to 5 job in 2016, Khalid went full-time with content creation.

The Joint Account Is Born

Following the success of individual accounts, Khalid decided to open a joint social media account with his wife, Salama. The couple began posting short skits on TikTok together under their @khalidandsalama account which garnered millions of views and followers. Salama also began posting on her own social media channels too, focussing on skincare and beauty.

Salama began to find her own niche on social media, gaining a huge following in the beauty space, which prompted her to open up about her skin condition, vitiligo which she was diagnosed with at the age of five. Salama’s following grew tenfold in the beauty space, which led to her launching her own Korean technology-backed, skincare line Peacefull in June 2021. Winning a plethora of awards, the clean, cruelty-free products are now sold at Sephora, Nyssa and more.

Deleting Social Presence

After years spent online, creating a name and brand for themselves, the two began to switch up content styles. Slowly removing posts together, Khalid and Salama began to explore new avenues of social media. From taking us through his inspirational fitness journey to showing us the ins and outs of her entrepreneurial endeavours, the pair began to showcase different parts of their lives and personalities to their growing audience. As of 22 June 2023, posts of the couple from both accounts have stopped.

Rumours of a split

Though all speculative, when fans began to notice fewer posts together and the echoing unfollowing of each other, rumours about a separation began to bubble. With multiple fevrious Reddit discussions on the couple’s current state even beginning to pop up, in early 2024. Amplifying the break-up buzz, the pair ended up deleting their widely loved and followed joint Instagram account.

Sending gasps through the online, and IRL, community, Khalid took to his Instagram this week to upload quite a massive life update. Captioned “Alhumdulilah”, the black and white picture of the two embracing hands feature two engagement rings. While speculations on who the mystery woman is continue, it’s official, the Emirati content creator is engaged.

Divorce confirmation

In a YouTube interview with Emirati presenter Nour Aldin, the Peacefull founder announced the news she and Khalid were officially divorced when she was questioned about the split.

“You are now separated, or can I say divorced?” Nour questioned, before Salama responded, “Divorced.”

“For the first time, Salama’s life wasn’t dependent on anyone,” the mother of two continued. “Before marriage, I was dependent on my family. After marriage, I was dependent on my husband. But now as an independent person, it’s the first time that I know Salama.”
