Emirati Women’s Day is no longer confined to just one day.
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, the mother of the UAE, announced that the occasion will now stretch into a month-long celebration, beginning August 28. The news came via the UAE General Women’s Union Instagram page — a fitting expansion for a day first celebrated in 2015 to mark the anniversary of the GWU’s founding in 1975.
“The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, taught us that building people is the foundation of building nations, and that women are essential partners in development and a source of strength for the family and society,” Sheikha Fatima wrote in her letter announcing the news.
Her words point to a workforce already shaped by that legacy. As per the Ministry of Health & Prevention, women represent 66 per cent of the workforce in the public sector, 30 per cent of whom are in leadership positions and 15 per cent of whom are in technical and academic positions. In the private sector, more than 21,000 female entrepreneurs are driving the UAE’s economy forward.
This year’s slogan, “We emerge stronger and better,” captures the spirit behind the expanded celebration. Sheikha Fatima believes it “reflects the spirit of the UAE, a spirit that knows no rest, is not content with what has been achieved, but looks to the future with ambition and responsibility.”
Rather than appreciation alone, the month will spotlight the ecosystem of support behind Emirati women – the institutions that educate them, the communities that empower them, and the families who stand beside them. This includes the men who act as pillars of strength in their lives: fathers, brothers and partners, whose support allows women to hold positions of power while still carrying the values of their homes.
That support system extends beyond the UAE’s borders. Cross-border partnerships have placed the country at the forefront of development while underscoring its commitment to women’s empowerment as a global humanitarian imperative — one to which Emirati women contribute heavily.
“The daughters of the UAE have carried the values of goodness, coexistence, and peace to the world, participating in diplomacy, humanitarian work, and international development, and presenting a distinguished image of a nation that places humanity at the heart of its mission,” Sheikha Fatima said.
The newly designed Emirati Women‘s Month itinerary will bring all of this together: celebrating the achievements of Emirati women and their role in national development, showcasing inspiring personal stories, highlighting the role of men, strengthening institutional support for families, and launching national initiatives and community partnerships built around empowerment and giving back.
