It might just be the most quintessentially Brit fashion brand in the business, but the man behind Burberry’s latest capsule collection is 33-year-old Russian photographer-turned-designer Gosha Rubchinskiy, best known for his ‘90s street punk-influenced eponymous label.

The world first caught glimpses of the Gosha x Burberry capsule at the Burberry Spring/Summer 2018 menswear runway show last year (see gallery below). Finally, it finally lands in stores tomorrow (Saturday, January 6).

Or perhaps we should correct that to ‘store’, given only one in Australia’s been chosen to stock pieces: the Burberry boutique in Chadstone. In quite a coup for Melbourne, it’s one of just two in all of the South Asia or Pacific selected by the brand’s powers that be (the other is Pacific Place in Hong Kong).

For fans of the designer widely regarded by industry and media as “the man who made Russian fashion cool”, it’s been a very long wait.

Gosha has helped Burberry revamp its most iconic classics – including that sometimes over-appropriated signature check – with a street style lens.

Think oversized fits, an ironic check shorts suit, two-toned trench coat and kooky pieces like this bucket hat, created in collaboration with British milliner Stephen Jones. Like it, a baseball cap and duckbill cap both come in gabardine and check cotton twill, with detachable ear flaps.

Perhaps not surprising given his recent collaboration with Adidas on a range of spectacularly cool, hyper-mod trainers, there’s not footwear in his Burberry hook-up (on this occasion, at least). Note: he’s also collaborated with skate label VANS on limited edition trainers too.

Given his photographic background, it also makes sense the Gosha x Burberry collab was teased again late last September in gallery. An exhibition held at Old Sessions House in London called Here We Are, showcased photographs of models wearing the Burberry collection shot by Rubchinsky himself, along with photographic prints, projections and installations.

“Working with Christopher has been a great adventure,” said the Russian of soon-to-depart long-time Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey. “Our extended collaboration… really embodies what I feel is British culture today, a mix of iconic pieces and youth.”

The Gosha x Burberry capsule collection is available online and in the Burberry Chadstone boutique from January 6, along with other select Burberry stores globally, Dover Street Market and Comme des Garcons concessions.
