Crisp button-downs were one of the most common trends on the Spring/Summer 2017 runways, but what was soon apparent was the blatant desire by rival designers to outdo one another with wild detail.
At Victoria Beckham, shirts were asymmetrical and sexy, hinting at hurried post-encounter dressing. Dolce & Gabbana, Jacquemus and Johanna Ortiz all put their spin on the statement balloon sleeve, while Monse excelled in the art of the elongated cuff.
Whether via a mismatched hem, cut-out shoulder or off-centre neckline, the effect of all these deconstructed proportions is that of a Picasso self-portrait. Maximalism has moved into the house of this minimalist fashion classic and hung out a sign to tell the neighbours.
