As pervasive as Euphoria’s beauty influence was proceeding its first season, the A24 series’ sophomore chapter is bound to bring something new to the table. Delivering the same experimental feel, makeup department head Doniella Davy continues to express the destructive teen angst and self-discovery of the show’s beloved main characters through their sublime makeup.

With both the makeup and the storyline described as a bit darker and a little more raw than season one, it could be argued that Euphoria’s brigade of wild teens may have lost a youthful spark, or a naïveté that they once were able to maintain, despite the web of very adult issues they experience.

Creator and director of the HBO teen drama, Sam Levinson describes changing it up for the latest season in a behind-the-scenes special following season two’s first episode. “The biggest fear was that we were going to go back and do the same thing. So, despite how popular the look of Euphoria was, I wanted to create something that still had the heart and soul of Euphoria, but it looks different, and it feels different. If season one was sort of a house party at 2:00 am., season two should feel like 5:00 am., way past the point in which everyone should have gone home.”

Makeup artist Doniella Davy has taken to her mesmerizing Instagram account to post a few inspiration snaps and explain her vision for this new chapter. “A glimpse of makeup inspiration for this season of Euphoria. Season 2 is like Season 1’s more introverted sister. There’s a steady ‘quiet’ to her, until she’s suddenly loud. She has her full glam moments but then switches to super minimalism. She loves her dewy skin, and going foundation free. She experiments with all different takes on winged liner from classic to modern to… something more free-form. She loves bright color, but only when she’s really feeling bold. She’s elusive with her sparkle and prefers a softer version of twinkling Euphoria glam. She also loves fake blood & gore.”

If season one’s key takeaway in makeup trends was eye crystals and sparkly embellishments, this season’s will be dramatic and graphic eyeliner. Taking inspiration from the 1960’s mod era, Davy’s striking eyeliner illustrations are sure to make a splash. As Hunter Schafer’s Jules is bound to veer on the side of more intricate renditions, characters like Alexa Demie’s Maddy will likely opt for more of a classic razor-sharp cat-eye look. Used as a tool for character development, Davy’s inimitable creations further the storyline and display the character’s perspective without ever speaking a word. As transformations take place, and these characters hopefully find the time and space to grow, we look forward to seeing their complex emotions and ever-changing mindsets expressed through their award-winning makeup designs.
