It’s shocking to think that just nine months ago we were rallying for the single state of Texas to reverse a ban on abortions. At the time Uma Thurman published a powerful essay via The Washington Post recalling her own experience with abortion. She fell pregnant in her late teens and without a support system – for a child she otherwise wanted to keep – Thurman underwent the procedure while staying in Germany.

According to the actress, it was her “darkest secret” until the essay was released in September 2021. Upon reflection the Kill Bill star wrote that it was “the hardest decision of my life”. “Choosing not to keep that early pregnancy allowed me to grow up and become the mother I wanted and needed to be,” she continued.

Thurman is now the mother to Maya Hawke, Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke and Luna Thurman-Busson. The 52-year-old’s fierce bravery in telling her story has become more relevant than ever after last week’s Supreme Court ruling to overturn the landmark bill Roe v. Wade ,and her passionate stance on abortion has rubbed off on her eldest daughter.

23-year-old Maya Hawke was invited as a guest on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for the release of her new album this week where she recalled calling her mother for “advice” before speaking on the show, expectedly on discussing abortion.

“We just got talking about the Supreme Court ruling and this essay my mum wrote a couple of months ago when they were putting these further restrictions on abortion access… about how if she hadn’t had it she wouldn’t be the person that she had become and that I wouldn’t exist,” Hawke passionately said.

She continued, “Both of my parents’ lives would’ve been totally derailed if she hadn’t had access to safe and legal healthcare – fundamental healthcare. Wealthy people will always have access to abortions but so many people, because of this ruling, will not only not be able to pursue their dreams but lose their lives.”

“I just wanted to say f**k the Supreme Court”, which was met with resounding cheers. Fallon responded, “Thank you for saying that”. Looking into the camera Hawk added, “But we’re going to keep fighting and win like our grandmothers did.”
