If you’re still swooning and obsessing over the latest season of Bridgerton, we’ve got the on-screen antidote for you. After many months of waiting, the Netflix adaption of Jane Austen’s novel “Persuasion” has almost arrived with the official trailer released today. Starring Dakota Johnson, we’ve received a first look at the highly-anticipated film which promises a period drama on the “one that got away”. More film stills were also released.

According to a synopsis from Netflix, Johnson will star as Anne Elliot who is living with her family on the brink of bankruptcy. Well known as an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities, she grapples with the return of lost love Frederick Wentworth. Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to heart.

Cosmo Jarvis (Peaky Blinders) will portray Wentworth while the dreamy Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) will play her cousin. The cast also features model Suki Waterhouse, Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant and BAFTA nominee Nikki Amuka-Bird. The film will serve as Carrie Cracknell’s directiorial debut after extensive experience in theatre.

The novel in which Persuasion is adapted from was the last that Austen wrote before her death in 1817. The film will release onto the streaming platform from July 15. Just one month away. To whet your appetite of period dramas before then, may we suggest these seven series.

Following this role Johnson is slated to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney as Madame Web, a character from the original comic book series.
