Cult Gaia unveiled its now-famous Serita Dress in February of 2020, and the skin-baring silhouette quickly became the dress to own, especially during the spring and summer months. Even amid the coronavirus pandemic, celebrities found an excuse to slip into the curve-hugging maxi dress, which is already making its way into A-lister’s wardrobes for the upcoming season.
On Monday, May 3, Tracee Ellis Ross posted an Instagram reel donning the woven, cutout knit number in Amber. The actress went barefoot for the video and teamed the dress with sunglasses for a look that screams vacation vibes.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was one of the first stars to wear the statement dress in May of last year. She posted photos wearing the Serita Dress in Off-White to her Instagram feed as part of a campaign with Cult Gaia in which the brand donated $25 to No Kid Hungry for every dancing video tagged with the @cultgaia handle. Following in the Rose Inc. founder’s footsteps, Romee Strijd announced her pregnancy news in the maxi later that month, and Hailey Bieber slipped into the Sand colourway for a beach photoshoot that following July. Unsurprisingly, it’s rare to find the Serita in stock on the LA-based label’s website.

Besides the fact that the Serita Dress is one of the brand’s signature pieces, another reason we expect it to be just as popular this summer is because cutouts are trending. We’ve seen myriad iterations of the trend on the SS21 runways at Brandon Maxwell, Zimmermann, and Fendi, among others. Tops, dresses, and lightweight sweaters feature cutouts of geometric shapes, keyhole slits, and midriff-baring cutouts à la the famed Cult Gaia number. The verdict? Everyone’s going to be embracing the style this spring and summer. That said, if you want to add the dress to your wardrobe, run, don’t walk.
The Serita Dress is available in five colours, the newest of which are Olive and Black, unveiled in February of this year. Shop the perfect-for-summer maxi ahead.
