These days, beauty trends move at a lightening pace — blink, and you’ll miss it (on TikTok). But today’s hot topic is tooth gems, the early ’00s micro trend that went hand in hand with low-rise jeans, rhinestone belts, chunky highlights and dangly belly bars.

Understandably they dropped off as fast as they appeared, but the subtle sparkly look is having a little renaissance right now on Instagram. Singer-songwriter Rosalía shared a photo of her toothy adornments earlier this week, four tiny gems affixed to her smile. The Malamente singer is known for her bold beauty choices — from intricate manicures to acid bright eyeshadows, and now the way she accessorises her mouth.

FKA Twigs was also spotted with a series of words, stones and other accessories stamped across her teeth. From the phrase GOAT when she released her recent album, Caprisongs, to a series of diamonds for her recent birthday party, the singer songwriter really doesn’t miss when it comes to accessorising.

Tooth gems, like almost everything else happening in beauty right now, feels distinctly Y2K. Unlike grills (that are still often worn by celebrities including Drake, Kim Kardashian an Travis Scott), tooth gems are semi-permanent and relatively low-touch. And proof that you really can embellish almost every single part of your body.
