With nostalgia the top beauty forecast for the year ahead, it seems that every vintage(ish) trend is having a renaissance. In 2021, it was all butterfly clips, piecey fringes and reflective gloss — but now we’re moving forward a few retrospective years into the era of top deck hair.

Arguably one of the early displays of creative colouring, top deck hair involves a blonde top section and brunette underside — much like the Cadbury chocolate block in which it shares a name. It’s a trend that started in the early 2000s before ombre and balayage took over, but thanks to a celebrity revival courtesy of Miley Cyrus, we’re wondering if a mass comeback is imminent.

Cyrus’ has always been a hair chameleon, but this latest look is a significant change. Her go-to stylist — Aleksey Bishop of Nine Zero One salon in Beverly Hills — has shared multiple shots of the transformation, characterised by choppy platinum blonde upper layers and a rich brunette underside. Made even cooler with a shaggy fringe, it’s basically all the convincing we need to welcome top deck hair back into our lives with open arms.

The holidays also seemed like a great time to show it off, as Cyrus co-hosted a NYE party with Pete Davidson for NBC. The multi-outfit performance included guest appearances from her sister Noah Cyrus and Brandi Carlile, a boat party, a wardrobe malfunction and countless Instagram moments.
