The final chapter of The Crown will arrive on our streaming devices before Christmas, Netflix has revealed. The prized jewel in the streaming service’s proverbial tiara of titanic content will conclude with the upcoming sixth and final season.
However, the series’ final bow will not be one that goes unnoticed, but rather one that will undoubtedly generate a stellar standing ovation thanks to Netflix’s tactical rollout plan.
The release of The Crown season six has been split into two parts. The first four episodes—which will pick up in 1997 following a then Prince Charles’ divorce from Diana, the late Princess of Wales—will be released on November 16, before the remaining six episodes drop on December 14.
It’s pertinent timing considering the conclusion of Netflix’s chronicling of Queen Elizabeth II’s life draws to a close less than a year after her death on September 8, 2022. Fans of the show have long wondered how far Netflix executives planned to fictionally follow ‘The Firm’, with current exacerbated tensions and in-house political foiling only garnering more interest for a retrospective review on the royal family.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed where they’ll leave The Crown, but it seems its future is to be passed back over into the hands of King and Country. Given the splitting of the release, it’s presumed that the first part will conclude with Princess Diana’s tragic death in Paris, while the latter half of the series will follow the aftermath, thrusting a young Prince William and Prince Harry into the fold.
Footage of a young Prince William and Kate Middleton during their university days at Scotland’s prestigious St Andrew’s Collage has also been shot—though the content is arguably serving major Bella Swan and Edward Cullen energy—meaning the show will go up until 2005, at a minimum.
But, with this being Netflix, we’re sure the show will have a few surprises up its sleeve. Case in point: the date announcement teaser trailer depicting Queen Elizabeth throughout the ages. In the trailer, Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II Season 1-2), Olivia Coleman (Season 3-4) and Imelda Staunton (Season 5-6), all wander through the halls of Buckingham Palace, leading toward this season’s ultimate idée fixe: what is The Crown without Queen Elizabeth? We’ll find out soon enough.
As of October 27, the first official trailer for part one of the sixth season has been released, promising a world of drama that might be a little more familiar to audiences. Touching on key moments from Princess Diana’s later years, the show has already teased a slew of references from the late royal’s life, particularly her more recognisable fashion looks from the ’90s. Yes, including her iconic takes on athleisure.
From the looks of the trailer, it’s clear that the show intends to cover the turbulent final years and tragic passing of Princess Diana, too. One snippet even shows Elizebth Deicki as Diana holding a note that reads, “Paris next week?”
But for more on that, we’ll have to wait patiently for part one of the final season’s release next month.
