Today, just over a month after the close of London Fashion Week, Stella McCartney unveiled her Fall 2021 collection in a video lensed by famed fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot. Shot at the Tate Modern, the fashion-forward lineup is full of pops of colour, dizzying patterns, and extreme silhouettes—all, of course, made with sustainability in mind, in signature McCartney style.
Below, find out everything you need to know about Stella McCartney Fall 2021.
1. the collection is made for a post-covid world
Blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, McCartney’s Fall 2021 pieces “reflect a collective yearning to dress up and go out, pairing heritage, glamour, and sport to joyfully elevate the norm with extravagance and opulence.” In other words, expect feel-good pops of colour (think: cobalt, fuchsia, and kelly green) worn alongside psychedelic prints inspired by London club culture.
2. PARTY CLOTHES ARE BACK
If McCartney has her way, long gone are the days of comfy sweatsuits. Instead, the designer created statement partywear: flashes of skin are exposed in knit sets, dresses are decidedly short and body-conscious, and glitter is on full display. Even more everyday pieces—midi skirts; stretchy knits; menswear-inspired outerwear—come with an eccentric edge.
3. stella mccartney doubles down on her commitment to Sustainability
Speaking of sustainability, McCartney continues to be a trailblazer. 77% of the Fall 2021 collection is made with sustainable materials. Wool was sourced from farms selected for their high animal welfare standards and regenerative farming practices; cropped and oversized MA1 bombers are cut from regenerated nylon and ECONYL; and 3D knits are rendered in stretchy forest-friendly viscose. Meanwhile the sequins that appear on a next-level one-shouldered jumpsuit are free of PVC.
4. next season’s it Bags come in many shapes and sizes
Of course, the season’s handbags are also vegan and cruelty-free—not to mention completely covetable. Ranging in size and shape, there are chunky aluminium-chained takes, Hobos accented with a wraparound woven strap, and roomy totes offered in shades of lilac and liquorice.
5. accessories are fun—and feel-good
New for Fall 2021 are a handful of made-for-stomping boots, such as Chelseas, which have been made with a solvent-free, biodegradable sole, and an over-the-knee version, complete with a utilitarian duck toe and a block heel crafted from recycled ABS plugs. Meanwhile, it’s only a matter of time until the season’s eye-level accessory—kitschy chic heart-shaped sunglasses made from bio-acetate and renewable, natural materials—end up on Instagram feeds of influencers the world round.
