It’s not unusual for a celebrity wedding to take the culture in a chokehold, just look at Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham’s nuptials in Miami for an example, which took place over a year ago, propelling the couple into new levels of fame (you couldn’t avoid them if you tried) and continuing to make headlines today (though probably not for the reasons they’d choose).
For 2023’s royal wedding, we were blessed with Sofia Richie marrying Elliot Grainge at the exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France over the weekend. At first, the wedding appeared not to pique the interest of the wider internet, due to Richie seemingly having her 15 minutes of fame already through her previous, more high-profile relationships with Justin Bieber and Scott Disick (and many appearances on Keeping up with the Kardashians because of it). But very quickly this changed.
First, Richie donned not one, not two, but three elegant and timeless custom Chanel gowns, prompting many to create style files showing how much her wardrobe has changed since her skintight, mini-dress days as an honorary Kardashian to the ‘quiet luxury’ looks she now favours. Then she began sharing candid behind-the-scenes clips to a new TikTok account created seemingly for this alone.
But the thing that really cemented her as the unlikely new It girl of the moment came courtesy of a wedding guest, who managed to capture the moment that Richie’s brother-in-law’s band, Good Charlotte, performed at the after-party, singing their hit song ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ to a room full of rich and famous people, dancing like maniacs.
Not only was Richie herself on the stage in a Chanel minidress, barefoot and moshing, but Cameron Diaz, married to Benji Madden, was shown as the camera pivoted to the crowd, jumping in the air widely as she filmed the scene herself (release the footage, Cam!). We also know somewhere in that crowd was ultimate duo Nicole Richie, married to Joel Madden, and her longtime best friend Paris Hilton.
