We have a saying in the fashion media biz: two’s a coincidence, three’s a trend. So when a trio of the most-watched style icons in the world right now stepped out (separately) in coloured fedora hats the same week Zuhair Murad sent them down his Autumn/Winter 2016 couture runway, it was time to take notice.

In Murad’s case, the mixture of scarlet, maroon, dusty pink, moss green, purple, royal blue Akubra-style hats topping princess-like beaded gowns was meant to be ironic, but it actually touched on what’s set to be a huge trend in Spring Racing headwear this season. (What a novelty: a race-day hat that actually shields you from the sun.)

Long-time fan of the felt hat, Gigi Hadid, offset her moss green wide-brim with a patterned Adidas Originals bomber and (much shorter) clash-matchy BF, while Chiara Ferragni’s hat battled with her Bieber merch tee for the coolest accessory prize of the day when we saw this pic.

Celine Dion (yes, the singer – there are none more surprised than us she’s sharing space in a trend story with Chiara and Gigi) did her newly-appointed dresser Law Roach – Zendaya’s stylist and one of the best in the game – proud with her grey fedora. A far cry from some of the disasterous headwear she’s exposed us to in times past. Such is the universal appeal of the high-quality coloured fedora – you literally can’t get it wrong.

Australian label Bec & Bridge was ahead of the game when it sent co-branded Akubra hats down their Australian Fashion Week runway in 2012. The hats, which came in three colours, were instand sell-outs
