If my mother taught me anything about style, it’s that simple jewellery is always timeless and quality will last forever. Be it thanks to the rise and fall of fast fashion or our fascination for the finer things in life, the gold chain has always prevailed. Iterations of the style have flooded the runway for Spring/Summer 2021 causing a swift chain reaction (pardon the pun).
Jacquemus welcomed the simple chain and chunky pendant (it’s signature Chiquita bag immortalised into gold), as did Fendi albeit with a branded padlock. The likes of Brandon Maxwell and Sacai opted for a simple choker with Tod’s and Viktoria Beckham reinforcing the notion: go big or go home.
The devil works fast but influencers work faster with the gold chain moving from the runway to the newsfeed at lightning pace. But due to stay-at-home orders, the trend revival is more pared down, more wearable. In addition, our love for layering has made the gold chain all the more subject to mixing and matching with other styles as best seen on the likes of Emili Sindlev and Maria Kragmann.
GRAZIA Fashion Director Aileen Marr suggests a “combination of heavy and fine link, pendant and jewelled or pearls – layered evenly. Heavy link gold or silver is very on trend. But don’t mix the metals.”
For something a little different, the old-school ‘T Bar’ such as the Medley Fundamental Chain has seen a recent resurgence. In particular, it lends a much-needed and effortless touch of glam on Zoom calls.
