While most of us are getting made up with less frequency lately, there is still something so satisfying about watching someone effectively apply their own – especially when that someone is Selena Gomez. In a new video, the singer has revealed her current going-out makeup routine and while it might sound intricate – yes, there’s winged liner involved – the Rare Beauty founder makes it seem oh-so-easy.

She begins by prepping the skin with Sephora Collection Eye Masks ($6) and applying a layer of Tatcha’s The Dewy Serum ($125).  “I have to wash my face before I apply makeup – it bothers me, I just need to have a clean canvas to start,” she explains, before applying her Rare Beauty primer. Gomez founded the brand last year, and it recently launched in Australia at Sephora – so lucky for us, we can emulate the entire look.

Next Gomez applies her base, using her Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation ($49). “A little goes a long way, and I like to do a circular motion when I’m putting on my foundation,” she says, dotting the product around her face, before buffing it in with a brush to “get in every corner” of her complexion.  While she admits that she once loved wearing lots of makeup, she feels “sexier” with less now. “You don’t need it to look beautiful, because you already are beautiful,” she says.

Gomez uses an extra layer of foundation to cover a few blemishes, which she admits that she treats with an old-school beauty technique – drying out spots with toothpaste. “When I do have any sort of breakouts, I’m not gonna lie – I love the toothpaste! For some reason, that’s what I used when I was 17, it’s just a trick that works,” she laughs, before applying the Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer ($33) – “one of my favourite products!” – to her under eyes and lids as a base for eyeshadow.

After filling in her brows with Rare Beauty’s Brow Harmony Shape & Fill Duo, Gomez slicks on the brand’s Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow in the shade Nearly Mauve ($34). “I like how the mauve looks on my eye colour,” she says as she buffs the colour in with an eyeshadow brush. “I have brown eyes, so I think it makes them pop.” Next up is winged eyeliner, which Gomez admits that she is “good at” but sometimes – like most of us – she “just can’t do it”.

Needless to say she sticks the landing this time, creating a sculpted cat-eye flick that she then amplifies with Rare Beauty’s Perfect Strokes Universal Volumizing Mascara and curled lashes. “The cat eye look for me happened when I got a little older. I love the way that it shapes my eyes. When I wear my hair up, it gives me that snatched look, if you will,” she says of her signature glam.

After adding a little bit of Rare Beauty’s Stay Vulnerable Melting Blush ($36) in a matching tone to her eyeshadow, Gomez blends a touch of bronzer across her temples, cheeks and jawline to warm up her complexion, followed by some highlighter on the high points of her face to add glow. “The Positive Light Liquid Luminizer – this one is my favourite colour,” she says, holding up the Mesmerize shade ($38). “I end up using this one just because of the tint of pink, and I love that it has a touch of gold as well.”

After dotting and blending her highlighter with a brush, Gomez reapplies her concealer underneath her eyes and around her nose. For her lips, she applies Rare Beauty’s Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick ($34) as a base before adding a coat of the brand’s Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm in – you guessed it! – Nearly Mauve ($30). She then intensifies her eye look by adding an extra layer of mauve shadow before finishing with a spritz of Rare Beauty’s Always An Optimist 4-In-1 Mist ($41) to set her fresh face.
