As news hit our desks that Saint Laurent’s deliciously structured Fall/Winter 2023 collection has finally arrived in boutiques, a torrential Spring downpour arrived.

Amongst the images of sumptuous leather outerwear and slinky all-black tailored ensembles, the sombre showers reminded us that despite our seasons never quite aligning with that of the international fashion calendar, investing in a cocoon-esque wooden coat, or perfectly draped evening wear designed to combat dreary weather, is never a gamble. Especially when they’re crafted by the master of understatedly sophisticated womenswear, Anthony Vaccarello.

This collection sees Vaccarello, once again, deftly inject archival silhouettes with a modern attitude, resulting in a melange of sleek, slick and perpetually covetable designs that can easily serve as both fundamentals or statement pieces in your closet.

Recontextualising the dramatic 80s wardrobe of yore, Saint Laurent has re-envisioned power dressing by refining corporate staples à la Melanie Griffith in Working Girl and regal shapes once worn by Princess Diana.

Leather, a key fabric in this collection, is worked into soft-as-butter drop-shoulder jackets and textured aviator bombers that adorn pleated crepe and form-fitting midi skirts.

Elsewhere in the collection, the supply fabric is worked into new accessories like the bucket style Le 37 tote, or the oversized Giant Nikki bag in grained lambskin and silver hardware.

Winter warmers like The Matrix-esque nylon trench coats and calf-skimming wool maxi dresses are elevated through the luxuriate’s tactful layering. Here, each piece, whether it be the sensual gloved lace top or vampy asymmetrical jersey dresses, serves as an ever-evolving puzzle of glamour to style and coat yourself with to your heart’s content.

The collection evokes the allure of late nights in Paris; the sculpted coats you throw over yourself as you exit La Perle in the Rive Droite, and the hooded sheer blouses you pull tightly around yourself as you soak in the ritzy City of the Lights.

Thankfully, with the collection now available for purchase in all Saint Laurent boutiques, turning this fantasy into a reality merely requires a trip down to your local marbled store. There, between the legions of Icare shopping totes sitting in wait on gilded shelves, you’ll find the collection perched for the taking.
