Velvet’s reign as the monarch of all-day party fabrics has come to an end. What rules now? The sequins that shimmered on the runways of all four big SS18 Fashion Weeks, most notably at Tom Ford, Chanel and Dior. Blend them with fashion’s modern-day love-a air with rainbow patterns – we like to refer to the union as disco rainbow – and you’ve got the ideal alternative to all the pretty pastels we’re seeing right now.

Around the same time Australia said a resounding yes to same-sex marriage – symbolised of course by the rainbow flag – multi-coloured stripes also prevailed on the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Peter Pilotto and Jeremy Scott. Style yours with denim or a hoodie for daywear, or push the boat out in full regalia for the evening.

Even the beauty world’s jumped on the bandwagon. Wella Professionals, which happens to be the exclusive haircare partner for the 40th Anniversary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2018, just dropped an 11-colour set of semi-permanent hair hues spanning the whole rainbow spectrum. Teased and timed to perfection.
