When it comes to fashion hook-ups, fine artists are the new celebrity collaboration, particularly in the field of fabric design. And right now, it’s a case of the bolder the better.
From New York to Paris, the Spring/Summer 2018 runways were flooded with pop-art-inspired pieces in a vibrant palette. But here’s the extra-fun part: contrary to past sensibilities, the idea is to wear prints and patterns together. As in the same outfit – and often clashing.
At Marni, the mixed graphics struck a harmonic chord while at Gucci they buzzed in a beautifully chaotic way. Print queen Mary Katrantzou – whose name’s already synonymous with her pattern-heavy garb – had the ideal fabric toolkit to work from, with Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten and Maison Margiela offering excellent examples of the trend too.
Nervous? Don’t be. Start with a hero piece like one of these pictured below, then build around it and wow the world.
