Kate Middleton is reportedly considering her sister, Pippa Middleton, as her Lady-In-Waiting when she becomes Queen. And there really is no visual to describe this story other than the famous photo of the youngest Middleton tending to her sister’s wedding dress train in 2011.
According to royal historian Kate Williams (not to be confused with Kate and William), the Princess Of Wales, 42, might appoint her sister, 40, as her closest confidante when her husband assumes the throne. For the uninitiated, in the royal households in the UK, a lady-in-waiting accompanies the royal to engagements and offers support and assistance.
“The job of a monarch and a consort isn’t getting any smaller. The letters, the correspondence, the emails are growing every day,” Williams said. “So, when Catherine becomes Queen, the levels of tours, the levels of letters, the level of receptions, will still require this assistance. So, I think she will have to appoint some ladies-in-waiting.”
“I think traditionally, we might expect Catherine to appoint her sister Pippa, because Catherine is so famously close to her family,” she added. “She doesn’t have companions because she’s so close to her mother and her sister. I think we might possibly expect that Pippa might be someone she might appoint.”
While it makes perfect sense for Middleton to appoint someone she trusts implicitly in the role, Williams notes it may not be something her sister is ready to take on.
“Pippa has her own life — three children, and a busy life of her own,” she said. “It’s a fascinating question.”
Pippa is said to be a wonderful support to Kate, who remains “resolutely cheerful” as she battles with her health.
