Olivia Wilde was in the midst of presenting at CinemaCon for the advanced trailer screening of Don’t Worry Darling when she was served legal custody papers from her ex, Jason Sudeikis. The actress and filmmaker was speaking when a yellow envelope marked “Personal and Confidential” was left at the foot of stage.

“This is for me, right?” Wilde had asked, mid-presentation. “Very mysterious. I’m going to open it now.” She reportedly opened the contents and looked at the forms. Deadline reported that the director seem unfazed by the papers before continuing, “Is this a script? OK, got it. Thank you.”

At the time guests had assumed it was an unsolicited screenplay until it was later reported that it was actually legal custody papers. Wilde and Sudeikis never married but share two children,  son Otis, 8, daughter, Daisy Josephine 5.

According to a source, “Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis.

“Mr. Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved and he would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.”

The couple had been together before they split after nine years in 2020. Just months later it was revealed that Wilde was dating Don’t Worry Darling lead actor and musician Harry Styles.

Sudeikis has remained open about the split and in one interview discussed the struggles of moving on. “[The split is] an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about,” he said. “You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavour to learn something beyond the obvious from it.”
