This years’ Oscars red carpet – both socially distanced and digital – sent a clear message: after a lengthy pandemic-induced period of minimalism and austerity, good old fashioned Hollywood glamour is officially back. The most popular beauty look of the evening channelled the aesthetic of revered silver screen stars, from chic chignons and pin curls to deep, vampy lip shades.

The old Hollywood revival saw the red carpet awash with looks that referenced the historic heroines of Oscars past, putting an end to the smokey-eye, nude-lip combo we’ve become accustomed to in recent years. Admittedly it does feel strange that something so retro could feel altogether fresh – but that’s the very nature of beauty trends, no? Here are the old Hollywood hair and makeup looks we loved from the 2021 Oscars red carpet.

Brushed up brows and a slicked-back updo kept Vanessa Kirby‘s nostalgic deep berry lip and doll-like lashes firmly in the modern era.

Maria Bakalova‘s classic chignon, crisp red lip and soft eyeshadow evoked a decidedly vintage vibe.

Rising British star Olivia Cooke chose elegant makeup and timeless pin curls to accompany her glittering Versace gown for the virtual red carpet.
