Michelle Obama has stepped out in a dress befitting the goddess she is at her final State dinner as FLOTUS – and as always, she was the best-dressed woman in the room.

But while the former lawyer famously supports American designers at formal occasions, this time she broke her own rule by donning a spectacular rose gold chainmail gown by the couture arm of Italian design house Versace that would have looked just as much at home on the Oscars red carpet as the North Portico steps of the White House.

Given her failure to ever put step wrong in the diplomatic stakes, it’s no surprise this custom-made Atelier Versace dress was as much a gesture of goodwill as great style – the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his wife Agnese Landini were guests of honour at the star-studded dinner, where Gwen Stefani performed, first alone then with boyfriend Blake Sheldon, in front of the likes of Chance the Rapper (who took his dad as his date), Frank Ocean, Giorgio Armani and Rachael Ray.

The first lady’s fashion gesture wasn’t lost of Donatella either. “I am humbled and honored [sic] to have had the opportunity to dress the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama,” the designer wrote on her personal Instagram account. “Thank you, Michelle, for all the things you have done for America and for the world, and especially, for empowering and inspiring women everywhere.”
Talk about literally going out with a bang. Michelle, we’ll miss you more than you know.
