In the hills of Los Angeles, what goes on behind closed doors isn’t usually subject to tabloid gossip or front-page reports.
But, with Jada Pinkett Smith opening the floodgates of secrecy by revealing she and Will Smith have been secretly separated for six years, it seems that other A-listers are following suit and coming clean to the public about the accurate standing of their relationships.
However, the latest couple to willingly disclose the nature of their romance is one we never thought we’d hear from: Meryl Streep and Don Gummer.
We had hoped that the decorated actress may survive the bedlam and chaos of the “year of breakups”, as 2023 has now been coined by netizens, but the Hollywood alumni has divulged that she and her sculptor husband have also been separated for more than six years.
A spokesperson for the 74-year-old released a statement to the press confirming that while Streep and Gummer “will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart”.
Streep and Gummer were last spotted in public together at the 2018 Academy Awards, meaning that as per Streep’s timeline, the former couple would’ve been in the throes of their separation and had been apart for at least a year.
Streep and Gummer would’ve celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Streep and Gummer share four adult children who have all followed their parents into creative careers. Their oldest, Henry Wolfe, 43, is a musician, while their three daughters, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32, are all actresses. Their middle daughter, Grace, has recently welcomed a child with her music producer husband, Mark Ronson.
Streep has recently appeared in the third season of Only Murders In The Building, though it’s not confirmed if she’ll be returning for season four.
